A 29-year-old man has been jailed for 10 months after leading police on a high-speed chase through the centre of Manchester while driving under the influence of drugs.

Manchester Crown Court heard that he was only stopped when he crashed into a parked car.

During the brief pursuit, the man drove through red lights, narrowly missed hitting another vehicle which was turning onto the road, and was speeding at 70mph in a 30mph zone – finally crashing into the back of a parked car on Swan Street.

Prosecuting, Andrew Macintosh said CCTV operators first called the police’s attention to the man just before 3am on Easter Monday. They believed him to be drunk after leaving a club on Sackville Street, and saw him getting into a car.

The officers began to give chase as the drug driver went on to Travis street before he reached Great Ancoats Street and continued toward Oldham Road.

After colliding with the parked car he attempted to flee on foot, but he was quickly apprehended.

While not over the drink driving limit, as first suspected, tests showed him to be three times the legal limit for cocaine.

Mitigating for the defendant, Patrick Harris asked the court for a suspended sentence, noting that it was a “short period of driving” and that no one was injured.

He went on to say that his client had taken cocaine following issues with his family earlier in the day and that he suffered from mental health problems and had undergone hospital treatment.

Judge Timothy Smith said, however, that a suspended sentence was not possible due to a previous “lack of compliance with court orders.

He continued saying that it was a “relatively short but significant police chase” with the area getting “busier and busier” as people left nightclubs.

“It was a course of driving wholly fraught with obvious risks and danger to life and limb,” he added.

After he pleaded guilty to drug driving, dangerous driving, and driving with no license or insurance, Judge Smith sentenced the man to 10 months in prison.
