Southend Magistrates have banned a man from driving for 36 months after he was caught driving under the influence of drugs as part of a wider police operation.
The 25-year-old driver was driving a BMW which police officers in Shoebury believed to be involved in the supply of drugs.
On approaching the driver, officers detected the smell of cannabis and the driver admitted that he was driving without insurance. He was also found to be driving with an expired provisional driving license.
Following his arrest, blood tests showed him to have traces of both cannabis and cocaine in his system.
A member of Essex police said: “By driving under the influence of drugs [this man] was placing not just himself but other road users at risk.
“Fortunately we were able to stop and arrest him before he caused any harm to himself or others.
“Operation Raptor will not tolerate any drug-related crime in our county and where we are aware of people involved in offences related to drugs we will arrest them.”
Operation Raptor was set up to tackle drug and gang-related crime in the county, with teams operating in the North, South, and West.
The defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of drug driving, driving a motor vehicle without insurance, and driving other than in accordance with a license.
In addition to the 36-month ban, Magistrates ordered him to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £85 costs.
