A man has been jailed after a drug driving accident in which he drove his car through the front window of a family home.
The 25-year-old man told police he had been driving at 80mph and was “off my f***ing face” on drugs after he lost control of his Volkswagen Golf.
The car crashed through a bollard, a wall, a bush, and the front window of a residential house in South Church, Bishop Auckland.
The man told Durham Crown Court that he believed he may have fallen unconscious prior to the collision which took place at 9.20pm on March 8.
Neighbours helped him from the wreckage of his car, but he fled and was arrested at his home in Shildon shortly afterwards.
The married tenants were in the front room watching TV at the time of the collision and were showered with shattered glass.
While they were badly shaken, they said that they were glad the incident took place when it did, telling the court in a statement that their two children, aged six and one, kept their toys in the bay window recess through which the defendant crashed.
“The kids’ toys are under the window and they play in there a lot. Had it been any earlier, my kids would have been injured,” said the husband, while his wife added that 70 percent of the toys had to be thrown out due to glass damage.
She went on to say that the living room became a “no-go” room for the family for 16 weeks while repair work was undertaken at an estimated cost of £3,212.
The court heard that the driver had a string of previous offences, including 11 convictions for 29 offences, and also that he suffered mental health issues, for which he receives support in the community.
Mitigating for his client, Jonathan Harley said that the man had not misused drugs for five months and that this had been a relapse into taking a concoction of substances following an argument with his partner.
He said that the defendant remembered getting into the car, but that was followed was “a blank patch”.
The defendant pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drug driving, driving without a license, failing to stop after, and report an accident.
Jailing him for 17 months and banning him from driving for two-and-a-half years, Judge Jonathan Carrol said he “should have been nowhere near a motor vehicle that night”.
