A man has been jailed at Leeds Crown Court after leading police on a 100mph chase through Dewsbury while drug driving under the influence of cocaine and cannabis.
Police spotted him change direction as he came out of a pub car park, and signalled for him to stop on May 19.
The defendant, who had two passengers in the car with him, initially pulled over but then drove off as the police officer approached.
Heading towards Dewsbury at 100mph on Bradford Road, the officer aborted the chase on reaching the town centre due to the risk to public safety.
The man finally lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a lamppost, with no injuries.
The defendant and his passengers fled on foot, abandoning the car, but police apprehended the driver at Dewsbury railway station. Tests showed him to be over the drug driving limit for both cocaine and cannabis.
Mitigating for the man, Anastasis Tassou said that his client’s actions were out of character as he had been made redundant earlier in the day.
The defendant, a bricklayer, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, three counts of drug driving, and driving without insurance.
Sentencing the man to six months in prison, Recorder Ian Harris said: “You put the public at risk, in my judgement substantial risk, of serious harm, perhaps even worse.
“Motor vehicles in the hands of drugged drivers are dangerous. The need for a deterrent and punitive sentence outweighs personal mitigation.”
