A 32-year-old man has been jailed for two years after a drug driving smash which killed his baby daughter, left his 6-year-old son with life-changing injuries, and seriously injured his partner.
The man lost control of his Mazda in West Sussex before colliding with a Vauxhall Corsa travelling in the opposite direction on January 10 just after 4pm.
He was admitted to hospital with serious head injuries while his partner was admitted with serious spinal injuries.
Their son, aged six, will require palliative care for the rest of his life having suffered severe head injuries while their seven-month-old daughter died later that day in hospital.
The 37-year-old driver of the Corsa was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Blood tests following the accident showed the man to have traces of both cannabis and cocaine in his system.
Investigating officer Tony Crisp, of the Sussex Police Serious Collision Investigations Unit said this was a tragic case for everyone involved.
He said: “This was the most tragic and traumatic of cases, affecting not only the lives of a close-knit family who have struggled to cope with the consequences of the crash but also the innocent driver who was hit, and members of the public and the emergency services who stopped at the scene – many of whom were actively involved in giving emergency first aid.
“While we cannot be certain drugs were the sole cause of the collision, they may well have affected his ability to safely drive his car.
“It goes without saying that motorists should not, under any circumstances, get behind the wheel of their vehicle while under the influence of drink or drugs.”
After pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving while over the specified drug limit at Lewes Crown Court, the man was sentenced to two years imprisonment and banned from driving for three years.
