The family of a woman who died after being a passenger in a drink‑driving collision have expressed support for proposed changes to drink‑driving laws and road safety measures in the UK.

The woman, identified in other reporting as 22‑year‑old Lillie Clack from Morden in southwest London, died in December 2021 from a bleed on the brain several days after the vehicle in which she was travelling overturned after colliding with a tree.

In that crash, police had attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver later pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and driving above the legal alcohol limit.

Under current UK law, the legal drink‑drive limit in England and Wales is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath, one of the highest in Europe. Proposals under the government’s new road safety strategy include a consultation on lowering this limit to 22 micrograms, the level set in Scotland and many other European countries.

The proposed strategy also includes measures to expand the use of alcohol‑interlock devices for some convicted drink‑drivers and powers to suspend driving licences of people suspected of drink‑ or drug‑driving offences before they appear in court.

Members of the woman’s family said they were grateful for the government’s focus on the issue. They have also called for an automatic interim driving ban for people involved in fatal collisions while investigations are ongoing.

The Department for Transport has stated that the new strategy aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads, with specific targets for overall road casualty reductions by 2035.
