A driver has been recorded travelling at more than 130mph in heavy rain on the A9 in the Scottish Highlands, according to Police Scotland.

The incident was part of recent road patrols and enforcement activity carried out by officers on the route. Three other motorists were also charged with speeding during the same operation.

In addition to the speeding offences, police arrested four drivers for drink‑driving, with two of those found to be five and six times over the legal alcohol limit. A further three motorists were arrested after testing positive for drugs.

Con Scott Smith, of the Highlands and Islands road policing unit, said the operation reflected the force’s focus on identifying and dealing with serious road offences. He stated that such behaviour posed significant danger not only to the drivers involved but also to other road users.

Rural Road Safety Campaign

Separately, Police Scotland officers carried out a road safety campaign during August at several of the Highlands’ popular tourist locations. More than 450 individuals were spoken to at sites including Urquhart Castle near Drumnadrochit, Dunrobin Castle near Golspie, and the Cairngorm Upper Car Park near Aviemore.

The campaign provided advice on safe driving, considerate parking, and navigating rural road conditions, including guidance on single‑track etiquette and maintaining awareness of speed limits and driving on the left. The initiative was conducted in partnership with Highland Council.

Sgt Calum MacAulay highlighted the region’s scenic roads and said the goal was to help all visitors travel safely. He emphasised that many drivers may be unfamiliar with rural driving conditions and that the campaign aimed to offer clear, practical guidance throughout the summer season.
