Criminal defence lawyer Nick Freeman has called for the government to consider limiting the timescales that a victim has to report an alleged “historic” sex crimes.
The celebrity lawyer, commentator and author – who is a long-time advocate of defendant anonymity in sex cases – said three years should be the maximum period for a report to be made.
This, he argued, would bring these allegations on a parity basis with personal injury claims in a civil court.
In relation to children, he added the three-year rule should commence when they reached the age of 18.
This comes on the back of a growing tide of alleged cases – some dating back as far back 40 or 50 years – that various police forces have been asked to investigate.
Mr Freeman, aka Mr Loophole, said: “Unless there are very cogent reasons, i.e. someone is held a prisoner, these allegations should be reported to the police within three years of them occurring.
“Invariably these claims relate to high profile individuals, including politicians and TV and radio personalities, and, in a number of cases, those being investigated are no longer living.
“By introducing a time limit I believe this will provide a fairer system to both complainants and defendants, and it will be easier for the Crown Prosecution Service to accurately assess if there would be a 50 percent chance of a conviction.”
