Essex Police published a report on 19 December 2025 describing an increase in arrests related to drivers suspected of being under the influence of illegal drugs. The report noted what it described as a “drug driving epidemic” in the county and provided figures for arrests made during 2025.

According to the report, more than 1,700 people were arrested on suspicion of drug driving in Essex during 2025, a figure that was higher than in previous years. In November alone, 190 drug‑driving arrests were recorded, the most for a single month in five years, and December’s total was expected to be higher.

The Chief Constable stated that drug driving was a significant concern for road safety and that the force was actively targeting individuals who posed a risk on county roads. Essex Police carried out increased patrols and enforcement activity, particularly during the build‑up to the Christmas period, when driving offences historically rise.

As part of these efforts, around 250 people were arrested in December as part of activity supported by the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, with approximately 150 of those arrests being on suspicion of drug driving. The partnership also supported the national THINK! anti‑drug driving campaign during this period.

The report referenced local collision statistics in which drug impairment was recorded as a factor in a number of serious collisions, and it included statements from police emphasising the force’s commitment to road safety enforcement.
