An analysis of driving data published in December 2025 identified several English cities where a relatively higher proportion of drivers have convictions for drink‑driving offences. Birmingham, a major city in the West Midlands, was listed among these locations.

The findings were based on data from Go.Compare car insurance, which reviewed its own records of policies taken out between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025. The data showed that the proportion of policies held by drivers with recorded drink‑driving convictions varied substantially across different cities and regions.

In the city comparisons, Nottingham had the highest proportion of policies held by drivers with a drink‑driving conviction, followed by Cardiff and Leicester. Birmingham appeared further down the list but still among those cities where some drivers had convictions noted on their insurance records. In Birmingham, the ratio of policies held by drivers with a drink‑driving conviction was reported as 1 in 467.

The same dataset also ranked regions across the UK. North East England had the highest regional proportion of policies linked to drink‑driving convictions, while Greater London had the lowest proportion.

The analysis was published ahead of the festive period, a time when authorities traditionally emphasise enforcement of drink‑driving laws. It drew on insurance data to provide insight into where past convictions have been more common among drivers purchasing policies, rather than official police statistics on current incidents.
