According to the survey results, 37 % of drivers incorrectly believed that the legal alcohol limit for driving was higher than it actually is. Many respondents appeared to overestimate how much alcohol can be consumed before exceeding the permitted threshold, potentially reflecting gaps in awareness about the current legal standards.
The research also noted a large increase in online interest in drink‑driving penalties during October 2025, with searches for terms such as “penalty for drink driving” rising sharply over that period.
The article used these survey data to highlight general public understanding of drink‑driving laws, in advance of the festive season when authorities typically step up enforcement and public messaging around impaired driving.
