A woman in Liverpool was given a suspended sentence after admitting to a drink‑driving offence in which she was found to be over the legal alcohol limit while her young children were in the vehicle, according to reporting by the Liverpool Echo.
The incident occurred earlier in the year when the motorist was stopped by police and subsequently failed a roadside breath test. At the time of the stop, the woman had her toddlers with her in the car.
When the case reached court, the judge handed down a suspended custodial sentence, meaning the sentence will not be immediately enforced unless further offences are committed during the suspension period. The court also imposed a disqualification from driving and a fine as part of the overall sentence.
The reporting noted that some members of the public expressed concern about the outcome, citing the presence of young children during the incident and commenting on the severity of the sentence.
Drink‑driving offences in the UK carry a range of potential penalties depending on the circumstances of the case, which can include fines, disqualification from driving, and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.
